DO YOU USE SOCIAL MEDIA OR ONLINE DIRECTORIES TO LOOK UP PHONE NUMBERS? BE CAREFUL!
You Can No Longer Trust Listings from Third-Party Online Directories. Social media and online directory sites can contain wrong, outdated or fake information. Worst case: there is a criminal waiting for the phone to ring. Only trust official company channels for phone numbers and contact info.
Today, we can search, swipe and click to find a company phone number, an email address or a website – everything on the web is accessible from our smartphone, tablet or computer. So easy, but also – sometimes risky!
There are HUNDREDS of online business directories and social media sites that list companies. Have you ever wondered where all this information comes from?
Many of the listings are generated automatically (sometimes from out dated info) or is self reported. In some situations, the verification process is weak or wide open. Criminals and scammers can add a new fake listing, “take over” a listing by claiming it or in some cases simply submit an “update” and provide a fake number.
Recent cases involving locksmiths show people finding a fake listing calling a number and being instructed to pay in advance over the phone. In the end, nobody shows up to help and they are laughing all the way to the bank.
