While you’re looking forward to soaking up the sun this summer, don’t neglect these essential maintenance jobs around the house. We’ve broken down key tasks by month so that you can tackle them little by little before summer’s end.

If you come across more significant problems while you’re handling these jobs, keep a list so you can call in a contractor when you’re ready to address those bigger issues.

In June:

  • Strip the winter grime off your siding, deck, and outdoor furniture with a power washer.

  • Tackle window washing inside and out: Clean windows are less likely to crack, and dirt can actually scratch glass.

  • Eliminate standing water and in-stall outdoor fans to help keep the mosquitoes away.

In July:

  • Walk through each room of your home, tightening screws on cup-boards and doors and checking fasteners on furniture, and replace any that are missing.

  • Use white vinegar and baking soda to clean your overworked washing machine. For the dryer, scrub the lint tray with soap and water.

  • Beef up security: Check that all your deadbolts work smoothly, install motion-sensor outdoor lighting, and examine your window locks.

In August:

  • Check your deck or patio for splits or damages. Replace any loose hardware, and consider resealing or patching up cracks.

  • Test and replace batteries on your smoke and CO2 alarms, and check the expiration dates on fire extinguishers and first aid kits.

  • Freshen up the fridge before the busy fall begins, tossing expired foods and washing shelves and drawers with mild soap.
